Where do you think I'm From?

Seriously, if you never knew me before then a friend of yours introduced you to me, where do you think I am from? What do you think my nationality is? Here's a picture to help.

I thought I look 100% Indonesian, but even Indonesians ask me that. There had been times where I was introduced to new people and they directly asked this. Especially if the people talk to each other in English, blame it for being a 2nd language over here and blame them for mistaking my fluent-ness ( is there such word? ) for not being a local.

This doesn't only happen in my country. Apparently I can pull of saying I'm from any parts of South East Asia.

All my life, I have been mistaken for being a Thai ( which isn't entirely wrong, due to my mom ), Malaysian, Singaporean, Filipina, Cambodian, Viet...Some even went overboard by guessing I must be Chinese or Japanese. Hello, darker skin, bigger eyes, not pointy noses, classic South East Asian look? I wish I had one of those East Asian beautifully fair skin. I wish.

I'm not blaming anyone though, I wont call anyone racist for not being able to tell the difference between South East Asians but I'll probably just give them long lectures. I may not look Indonesian enough due to my pointy cornered cat eyes or unusually shaped face but now I'm used to it. I'm not mad about it and try to embrace it. Besides, it gives me tons of advantages in any of these countries. They don't charge me more in Bangkok like they do with other tourists ( I may not be able to speak Thai at all but I know how to shop talk locally ). They don't give me 'oh, she's a tourist' look when I chill in KL, but well Indonesians and Malaysians look freakishly similar anyway until I open my mouth to talk and not having one of those Malay accents. Will Amy and Ejannz please stand up and school me on this?

And when I was in Singapore, I found even my friends talk Singlish to me. Example : Ah, shaddup lah. you say you wan' to treat me go lunch. You all fart and no shit only.

I love it.

Do you look the way people where you're from supposed to look? Do you see it as an advantage / disadvantage?

You look Indonesian. A beautiful one at that! :) although I can see how you'd pass for a viet as well

I don't look Indonesian but I've been told that the way I carry myself is very Indonesian. Most of the time, people mistake me as Korean or Japanese. It's neither an advantage nor a disadvantage but I like to identify myself as being Indonesian :)

    and the word is 'fluency'

You don't have the classic only-Indonesian look that I've seen, but I might have guessed Indonesian. Thai might have been a first or second guess.
I think more or less I look American. :) Sometimes it was a disadvantage in Indonesia because I stood out so much. But overall, I guess it's ok.

Not so much at home, but when I go abroad people seem to think I'm Irish - which is kind of right since my mum's side of the family are all Irish. But as soon as I open my mouth you can tell I'm English. Well, that's if you can understand me. Most people can't! I should do a vlog one day and see what people think!

And the word you were looking for is 'fluency'. I think.

hahaha! omg, i LOVE the malaysian/singapore accent, and their crazy speech patterns. And the tendency to leave out 'h's in words. I remember my uncle coming to NZ to visit and at first I couldn't understand him because he kept saying "tree" instead of "three".

I'd probably have thought Indonesian or Filipino? Although now I think about it I've known a fair few Filipinos but never met anyone form Indonesia.

I'm Chinese by way of Malaysia so I don't have that super Asian look, I'm ridiculously pale (that 'beautifully fair' skin you mention, lol) but unfortunately don't have a cute pointy nose nor eyelids to speak of.

    I'd say Filo.

Ok, first of all I must say: Awak sungguh cantik ^^ When I saw your face, I couldn't comprehend where you were from. I though maybe north Indian or Middle East or some mix between Pinay and some other Asian race :P And I have to tell you, I've spent in South East Asia a lot of time, however, I still can't always guess the race. Especially when people are mixed and there's many who are. And Malay and Indonesian is really similar culture (like Austrian & German for example.) It's a nice post :) I won't be mistaken for another race, because I'm a typical Western whitey, with blond/reddish hair and freckles :P I don't have your problem :P~~

I thought about the idea of you looking Filipina after you mentioned it, but when back and had another look at the picture and thought it's a hard mistake to make. A gorgeous Indonesian all the way!

I've had people think I was American because apparently I talk with an accent. Even my grandfather said to me one day "I didn't know you'd been in America, how long were you there for?"

  1. Chele said...:

Sweetie I am half Thai, speak Thai and still people treat me as a fucking foreigner. Sometimes I dont mind but sometimes I get mad at some people who can say in such a mean voice "you dont look Asian at all" I am really proud of my Asian Heritage and it is 50% of me.
I do not look Scandinavian, apparently I do not look Asian so I dunno what I look like. It upsets me at times

  1. Amy said...:

I'm a little like Chele, but most people think I'm white. Some Asians - mainly Chinese - can tell that I'm mixed but anyone else thinks I'm white.

I personally do think you look Indo but I can understand the confusion because of your more delicate Thai features.

There are advantages and disadvantages to looking the way I do. I can't speak fluent Malay or Hokkien or Mandarin, though I do speak Manglish when I want to :P. Basically, I get treated well because I look white, but the problems are that i) I get ogled all the freakin' time because I'm a halfie, ii) I get treated like a tourist a lot which annoys me to death, and iii) I stand out too much.

As for the Indo/Malaysian divide, I think there is a difference between a lot of them, but it is possible to make mistakes. The surefire test is obviously the accent. I guessed that one girl I met on a bus a while back was from Indo and she was so shocked that I'd been able to tell. It was all in her accent.

Alright, going to shut up now. I could go on allll day on this topic (as Chele probably could) but this comment is way too long anyway.

    xx

to be honest i thought you either malaysian or from the philipines but without an accent i suck at these things:)

either way i think u pretty!!

Oh goodness. I am thinking Indonesian, but that's probably because I already knew that you were and it's all I see now. haha!

I look very Canadian with my white skin, auburn hair and freckles and that has both advantages and disadvantages here in Ontario. Canada prides itself on being very multi-cultural and many employers are required to hire a certain percentage of visible minorities. I think this is a good thing, but it sometimes makes it difficult for someone like me, who looks as Canadian as they come, to find a job. If myself and someone with a visible minority are competing for, say, a teaching position, and we have exactly the same qualifications and experiences, the other person would be more likely to get the job based on their minority status here. It just forces me to be a bit more creative in my job search. ;)

I rely on the fact that I don't look English when I'm travelling. If I keep my mouth shut I can normally pass for most mid/south Europe nationalities. I most often get asked if I'm Italian or Arab, occasionally Slavic (I normally change my facial hair, depending on which country I'm travelling to...!)

The moment I open my mouth the illusion disappears though, which is sad...

Chele, you do look a bit Scandinavian -- wide mouth, and those cheeks are certainly a BIT Norse...!

  1. floreta said...:

hahaha i don't think i even know the difference between southeast asian and east asian ;P i have a hard time guessing different nuances of asian ethnicity too.. so i might guess thai, malaysian or filipina.

  1. Nashe^ said...:

It's an advantage. There was once I was mistaken for an Indian and a Chinese IN THE SAME DAY! XD
But I've had excellent service at the airport and many other places because the staff thought I was foreign. It's either Filipina, Indon or freakin Bruneian. I've even had bloggers email me in Tagalog. LOL. Austronesians rock.

I'd have actually guessed that you were from the Phillipines.

I'm actually Brazilian - born there and moved here when I was 7 - but no one, I mean NO ONE, believes me. I suppose it's because I'm fair skinned and have dirty blonde hair, but what people fail to realize is that Brazil is just as big of a melting pot as America is. Hello, look at Giselle Bundchen! She doesn't look Brazilian either, haha.

  1. ChinkyGirLMeL said...:

Indonesian...asian..... well, there's just one word to describe you sweetie, and my dear is "GORGEOUS!" =)

  1. freeteyme said...:

I knew you were South East Asian I just wasn't sure from where =). You do look like a Filipino too. Yes, like you, I too have been asked a few times. Spoken to in languagges where I responded with "Sorry I don't understand." and given the weird look like "Why can't you understand?". Cute post.

  1. R.C. said...:

hahahahaha! I get the same thing all the time! I am just boring old Canadian (with British from my moms side) and get anything from Russian to Romanian to pretty much anything eastern europeen!!! It's especially bad when I wear red lipstick... the Russian comments just fly out lol

  1. Nino said...:

An Iranian guy thought I was Russian when I flew back to Europe from Asia. I said I am Slovenian. What shocked me was he know Slovenia. I mean, who knows Slovenina besides Slovenians? ^^

  1. Brooke said...:

White girl with blond hair in Southern California... I fit in pretty well here ;) But I don't tan. I'm actually very fair when I'm religious about sunscreen, so in that sense, I do stand out a bit, especially for the next few months when everyone's bronzing it up!

Thanks for the ethnicity/nationality lesson... I just learned a lot from this post!

  1. I have never been able to tell the difference between any type of ethnic race really. To me I just know Indian, Asian, and Spanish. I would have classified you as indian, but I also separate that into Middle Eastern and then like Indonesian so I would def put you into the indonesian category. This may make me seem like an ignorant American, but I really can't differentiate between races, but it isn't like I really try to either.

I don't think other ethnicities could determine the difference between French, German, Italian and Greek people. I am told a lot that I look very Greek by most people. Now thinking about it, I would classify you as Italian too a little......hmmm. So many different ethnicity's. It does interest me!

I honestly wouldn't know if I hadn't read it, but you're pretty. I knew for shure that your were not from china or japan, but only becasue I have friends form both thoses places.=)

I guess I don't. When I tell people I'm cuban they always ask why I'm not black(not PC, and I'm sorry) but it doesn't annoy me anymore. There are tons of cubans with light skin, I think in my case it has something to do with the fact that both my great grandparents came from Spain and then moved to Cuba.

    =)

  1. LipstickOne said...:

    I would say Filipina.

nope..everyone knows I'm black..or African-American to be politically correct! lol

  1. Miss Rosa said...:

Hmm. I would have guessed Filipina, but I try not to assume. It's kind of the same thing I guess ... when I backpacked Europe everyone thought I was American. Even when I told them I'm Canadian. People like to assume what they want!

  1. Moonjava said...:

Lol, I get the same thing! People make all sorts of assumptions depending on where you're at. I laugh when I hear what people thing I am, I think I've also run the gamut, albeit not as many countries. I think I've been mistaken for Singapore, Malaysia, etc as well. Some people just start talking to you in that language and then you're like "Uhmmm, I'm sorry, can I get that in English?"

  1. tiff said...:

There aren't Indonesians here, so I can't really say if you look like them because I'm not sure what they should look like as a whole.

    I would say Vietnamese.

Plus, the fact that you look like Tila Tequila (who is also Vietnamese), helps. haha

I get mostly Chinese and Japanese, and sometimes Korean, and White and Asian mixed.

Very rarely would I get full white, but it has happen before. Once, a Vietnamese dude thought I was Mexican. haha

I don't find these to be insulting. Heck, I find it rather entertaining that some people think I'm something other than Viet.

  1. Margarita said...:

Well, I'm Polish, but apparently, have no true Polish 'colouring' - meaning blue eyes and blonde hair and fair skin.

I have olive-tinged skin, brown hair, hazel eyes. Much like my parents.

I've been mistaken for Italian, French, Portugese... I don't mind. My BF is French & Irish, but also has dark eyes and dark hair.

When we were in Paris we accidentally went to a VERY touristy cafe for a bite to eat, and the waiter kept talking to us in Italian. No joke.

All 'Bella! Bello! Grazi Grazi! Vino Vino'. I was like, no no, we're from Canada. I'm Polish. But he just kept talking Italian.

    Grazi.

  1. ~PinginRua~ said...:

I look pretty Irish, as far as I can tell.. (ie. pale as a ghost!) But having (naturally) dark hair and no freckles throws people off..and my voice. People always think I'm from somewhere else - English, American...

I don't think I sound like anything. I just don't have much of any accent, having lived in so many different parts of Ireland. I speak with just a little bit of everything - which may be what confuses people.

  1. ~PinginRua~ said...:

Oh! Just saw Margarita's comment now - since dying my hair blonde people have started assuming I'm Polish sometimes - which is strange when it happens! I dunno, pale + blonde.. makes sense, I guess, but, honestly, I don't see it.

    I look like me!

  1. Vanessa said...:

My mom is Belarusian, and I look entirely like my mom's side of the family, so I therefore look extremely Belarusian, even though I'm American and my other half is German/Irish. Like I've had people in Russia ask me, when they hear me answer the phone and speak in English to another American, where I learned to speak English so well and without an accent. Usually it's pretty obvious when someone's a foreigner, even if they're of European descent, and it's a huge advantage to be able to be mistaken for a Russian because foreigners are often the target of pickpockets etc.

  1. Katelin said...:

i get mixed ideas all the time of what i am, it's pretty entertaining.

  1. Retromus-ik said...:

I would say you were asian;) Besides that, I couldnt give you a country in particular! Indonesian sounds right hehe. People assume I'm Jamaican because there are a lot in Montreal, and then when I speak French, they think I'm from Haiti. It does get annoying tho; I find I look west African. Africans usually can guess that I'm of kin, but they can't all pinpoint Cameroon.

  1. *~Dani~* said...:

I am never good at this game. I am the one that will think deep thoughts "you are pretty." And you are. I dont think I think much about people's ethnicity unless they bring it up.

  1. i think you look Indonesian, but im not very good at knowing ethnicities. i am quarter native american, but only some people can notice it. i wish i was darker :]

  1. Bayjb said...:

People never guess where my ancestors are from. Well my last name is a little bit of a giveaway but still :)

  1. Jessy said...:

I have no idea what you look like considering I'm so sheltered and haven't been ANYWHERE in the world but some states here in the US. :)
I suppose you look Indonesian though :)
I've never been mistaken for anything but American. My ancestors are Italian, and thankfully I do not possess the big nose or other undesirable Italian traits hehe. Also, my skin is a little darker then the traditional Italian- I'm not fair skinned- more olive toned actually. I'm curious to see where people think I'm from when I move to Sweden!

  1. Kali said...:

I would have said Malaysian but tbh I wouldn't be able to tell the difference so IGNORE MEEE!

Also, Irish guys are always using the 'where are you from?' line on me in bars. They always get a bit of a knockback when I say Dublin.

    It's all:
    "I don't believe you."
"Would you like to see my passport?"
    "You don't LOOK Irish"
    "Ah. Well I am."

Then, if the guy is cute, I explain about being half-spanish and it works great as a conversation starter. If the guy isn't cute I pretend to be offended, narrow my eyes at him and stalk off.

So I personally think it's great!

  1. OmegaRadium said...:

If I didn't know better, I'd guess Thai or Philippina. I for one look like a Mexican, speak Spanish like a Mexican, and speak English like a white guy. It irritates me when white people are surprised with my English. They sometimes tell me things like, "Wow, you don't have a Mexican accent at all!" WTF? Am I suppose to sound like a friggin stereo typical Mexican, eh vato?

  1. Kizzy said...:

You look Indonesian to me! There are loads of people from Indonesia here in The Netherlands (obviously!), you would fit right in! :-D

  1. ceecee said...:

At first I thought you were from Latino decent. Then I read more about you and you proved me wrong :-P

I'm Mexican American - parents were born in Mexico, and I was born in the States. Majority of Mexicans / Mexican Americans have medium to dark skin, but not I! I have light skin, so a lot of people think I'm either Italian or Arabic.

  1. Ashley said...:

i have no idea what nationality you look like. lol. but i feel your pain. for some reason everyone thinks i'm one of the following: Mexican, Spanish, Greek, or Eastern European. People used to try to speak to me in Spanish all the time. It's insanely annoying.
But i take it as a compliment. There are some seriously beautiful people from those parts of the world.
just think of it this way....you're a mystery.
    people like mysteries. =)

  1. Sheri said...:

I think you look like.. you! :) Honestly, I don't know ethnicities too well to say, sadly. You are very beautiful though!

People never think I am from where I live now (in Alabama, USA). I'm from Florida, USA and I always thought I sounded like I was from there and looked like it... but I've gotten, Florida, California, New York, Connecticut, Texas, Michigan... lol

  1. amber said...:

I live in a predominately white area so that makes me horrible at guessing where other people are from and also I don't have a problem with people knowing where I am from.

  1. rima fauzi said...:

I think you look indonesia, maybe from bali, or kalimantan..
but in any case, you are pretty, and that's what matters.. (yes, i am that shallow! lol)

  1. i guess i'm never too late to comment right? =P

well, you can say that you look like you're from any part of SEA anyway. as for me, i always get either japanese or chinese. not so much variety and sometimes i have to admit, it annoys me. especially when they straight away speak chinese or japanese to me.

but you know what, it doesnt matter what you look like (as in indo, malaysian, thai, etc) you're very pretty in your own way :) honestly.

  1. Elisabeth said...:
