Can I Have Cranberry Vodka?

15 envelopes are finally sealed, fresh address stickers attached. Now I have mixed feelings : giddy, anxious, overwhelmed, scared, and nervous. In a way I've never really felt before. It's all I think about and wanna talk about. I have to stop myself from ranting about it all the time, you know? I'm not doing so well, clearly, since I'm still writing it here. What can I do? It feels like there's an angry polar bear banging the walls of my chest wanting to get out.

Oh in case you're a new reader and don't know what the hell I'm talking about, I'm applying for internships. To a bunch of hardcore law firms.

Which is why when a classmate at took peek at the envelopes, smirked and told me I'm doing a Mission Impossible. I feel like electrocuting him. Or at least screaming and letting him knows how much he's a moronic douchebag. I smiled politely and left instead though, regretting this move now. See, I know I'm no valedictorian but I'm not a brain dead either.

What's wrong with dreaming big?

Anyone here has an average / slightly above average ( not too high, not too low ) GPA and land a job in a dream workplace that people consider tough?

Super academically gifted people can shut up now, I swear. I need motivational stories.

There's nothing wrong with dreaming big! I know the feeling you're having right now, though. I went through it myself. Good luck to you on those applications!

I got a job as a design assistant at 17 with no kind of degree or anything. The designer liked me and I worked hard. I stuck with her design firm for many years until I decided to move on to something else. There were plenty of people just out of college who couldn't land a job at a design firm with a degree.

Work hard! Dream big! You never know!

My GPA was good, but the jobs offered to me seemed like a dead-end. So, I took a job when I graduated that I knew I was over qualified for... because I also knew that the boss of my job would be going on maternity leave within a few months and I was convinced that if I proved myself at the low job I would get offered the high job.

I did. I became the youngest ever to do that job (at age 22)

A year and a bit of working at that job I decided I wanted something better ... so I quit and started my own business (at age 24)

I am now the youngest person I know that does what I do, I love it, I make a good amount of money with plenty of room to grow this career exactly how I want.

It takes a certain amount of balls (meaning belief in yourself, ability to fail knowing you tried your hardest) to jump off a ledge and just go for it. But I did. And it was worth it.

Good luck! Remember to take risks and good things will happen!

Fingers are crossed! Really, I hate when people HAVE to insert a snide remark. I've learned it is because they are usually too chicken shiz to be so ballsy and take a risk (and are afraid to leave their comfort zone) so they're jealous. I hope you land something JUST to make his day even worse. LOL.

I don't have any motivational story :) But I've got this: "Better to fail spectacularly than to do something mediocre" (Randy Paush).

(actually I've got this right in front of my eyes on the wall right above my comp. screen. Heh. So I didn't have to look far :). But I thought it would be useful) Good luck!

  1. i may be a doctor, but i am far from super academic bitch. parents made me do this. i'm just the kind who finishes things i do. but i think so far, i'm lucky to work in my previous workplace. (not this one because i think this place is super stupid retarded)

and that's why i'm scared like shit for the upcoming interview. i mean, i'm neck to neck with those who really LOVE surgeries. i love it too. but not to the extend that others do.

i do feel like i'm the most retarded among my colleagues.

but there's nothing wrong to aim high, love! you're different. i think it's time for the world to accept different. when i say different, i mean wholesome. like you rap, you blog, you interact & such ya know. who needs a lawyer who doesn't know how real life works?? you're gonna be dealing with real life. not textbooks.

    ok? :D

I agree with the other commenters who say there is nothing wrong with dreaming big and aiming high! you'll never succeed if you don't try, right? at least you are pursuing your goals and trying to make things happen, which is a lot more than some people can say. so brush off the naysayer comments, go grab a cranberry vodka, send off those envelopes and feel proud of your pure ambition. and good luck! :)

I dream big and try not to have anyone to persuade me to think realistically. Not my cup of tea. Dream big, but dream big with confidence and determination.

Cranberry vodka is the new coffee. :)

And did you check your email yet? Big surprise!! ^-^

I'm not even graduated yet, and I don't even want to think about what I'll do after that. :( I don't know where should I aim my job too...

so I only think about my artwork, like dreaming too big hoping everyone in this world would buy something for me, while wishing I make a good business woman...

ah, good luck for you! I know you can do it!

You gotta network with the big wigs and get chummy, I guess. It's gonna suck way harder if you aim low and actually get it. Don't settle for anything less than what you really want, I say.

You know I'm rooting for ya! xo

I am so rooting for you Andhari. Don't let people get to you ... the classmate only said that because he knows you're competition and I'm sure you'll blow him out of the water! I don't think there's anything wrong with dreaming big ... my GPA is pretty average and I'm trying to get into teacher's college, which is also competitive (and that's before you actually get a teaching job, gah). I hope we'll both succeed <3

We're all thinking of you and holding thumbs! (Even though we know the firms will be fighting about you pretty soon...)

TAKE CARE and don't stress it!

I was like a C student in Uni and still managed to land a job I'm happy with. It took a lot of applications to a lot of places, but I finally landed a great job.

It's not in a super big place that everyone applies to, but it is in a place where I have some good coworkers (only a few bitches), a great boss and a lot of respect and responsibility.

I think dreaming big is important though. If you don't take the shot, you'll always wonder "What if I'd tried?"

  1. Heather said...:

Good luck! You have worked really hard and you totally deserve it.

Good luck. Everyone's intelligence is catered to what they are meant to do, at least that's what I think. Overall I was an average student, but I am good at my job, better than some people that were straight A students. All that matters is that you are doing what you want.

  1. there is absolutely nothign wrong with dreaming big!yes of course you gotaa be realistic about your own capabilities but if you know you CAN DO IT don't let one person's opinion dictate wot you can and can't do... go for it.

keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Last night I dreamed that I drank about 4 cranberry vodkas, but then my husband was mad at me because I'm pregnant and not supposed to be drinking anything alcoholic.

That's not the inspirational story you were looking for, I know. But just think, at least you're not pregnant and alcohol deprived!
