Damn it, Torrance Shipman!

So an associate asked me whether I want to be a cheerleader this afternoon.

No kidding. I was hanging out with one of my office girlies when she came in, looking excited to find both of us at the same time. At first I thought she'd want something done and keep us working until 3 am in the morning so we'd jump from the 21st floor or something. Instead she squealed and told us to prepare ourselves to be in our office's cheerleading team.

I know. WOW.

Apparently next June there'll be some sort of annual mini-olympic going on for law firms in Jakarta. It's pretty huge. They've assigned almoskt everyone young / fit enough to represent the firm and compete. Uniforms are made, practices and rehearsals are scheduled. Some of the intern guys were talking about soccer or basketball practices over dinner today, expressing their concerns on how other law firms have started to practice already. Another office mate talked about going to bowling alley to practice this weekend. Looks like they take it pretty seriously.

I wonder whether they'd boil me to death if I messed up a move.

See, there's a reason I wasn't in the cheerleading team back in high school. Yes, mostly because I was a big music dork and not cool or plastic enough to mingle with the popular chicks with their itty bitty skirts and pom poms but I think it's also because coordinated moves confuse me.

Which kinda doesn't make sense because I DANCE ALL THE TIME. In my room, in the club, in the living room, whenever I feel ecstatic. I have different types of dance too : victory dance, gorilla impersonation dance, yay-my-work-is-done-now-i-can-go-home dance.

But they're DIFFERENT than coordinated cheerleading moves. Very different. And not only because to do a gorilla impersonation dance all you have to do is wiggling your butt, put on an idiotic expression, scratch your belly and clap.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off watching Bring It On. All six movies simultaneously. This may or may not hurt me.

How good are you at following / memorizing a choreography?

Oh, I'm soooo bad at it. Hehe. I feel like an idiot when I'm dancing. I don't know why. Though I think YOU'LL be a good cheerleader.

  1. I completely suck at it! Luckily thought, cheer leading doesn't have the most difficult choreography so even I can play along. Is more about strength!

Wow, they really do take it seriously. I wonder if the winning firm gets some sort of prize or something.. probably not, it's probably just for bragging rights.

I think with dancing you only have to worry about what you're doing, and your moves.. but with cheer leading you have to worry about everyone else too, and be in sync with them.

    Good luck.

OMG! I would run for my life. No cheerleading for me please.

But you should definitely try it. ;p

Wow! Good luck...I would not do well at all. I used to be good at memorizing dance steps and such but I haven't taken a dance class in years, so I don't think I would wanna sign up for cheerleading.

Don't they say that cheerleaders are just retarded dancers? LOL. (I can tease, I was a cheerleader in high school) So don't feel bad if you mess up a move. I'm sure it's all in good fun.
Speaking of fun, it always seems law firms have the most fun--outside of work--parties, after work happy hours, etc. Just have fun wit it!

That sounds like a blast! Then again, I was on danceline in high school so I actually like coordinated routines. You can make it fun! : )

  1. I cheered for six years. The best thing to remember is if you mess up keep going and smile.

  1. Wow that sounds pretty hard core. And please channel your inner Torrance and Missy. If you cheer, "brr it's cold in here.." I would LOVE IT

Ugh. I love to dance like crazy but my coordination is HORRIBLE. Good luck! You'll make a cute cheerleader. Better show some pictures! =D

Wow, that's kind of scary. Can you opt out or does that get you dubbed "NOT A TEAM PLAYER"?

Haha sounds like fun though. Sometimes these work things are good for office morale :)

I'm not too bad at choreography. I did some dancing back at school and I can follow moves but I'm NOWHERE near what you could call a dancer.

I think you should just have fun with it!

I grew up a dancer, so my situation is a little different. I was also a cheerleader which was also a little different.. but either way, I still suck at following moves that arent my own. I mean i can DO i, i just don't like to!

Ok babe, now's the time to make a run for it.Do you even have a say in all this? If you don't den you need to start stretching and following some routines. I can't dance, not even to save my life. I've been blessed or maybe cursed with two left feet. lols

I can't dance or remember choreography for shit! I don't think my body is made that that. Lol.

  1. i'm extremely bad at choreographed moves. cuz i dont have boobs & butt to wriggle. the choreographer's very own words, i swear!!

  1. cassey said...:

Well my coordination sucks, so it doesn't work for me. Aren't cheerleaders supposed to be all peppy and fun? In that case I think you'll do well. :)

  1. Maryx said...:

Oh sh!t good luck with that one!! =) I remember being good at it at some point in life. Think I lost it though...

  1. Sheri said...:

Ohhh good luck with becoming a cheerleader for this! How hard are these moves they are going to make you do?

I'd actually suggest getting a dance workout dvd, since you're practicing alone. The choreography will help you see if you can get the moves down on your own, and you like to dance. Just think of the cheerleader moves like dancing, and you'll do just fine. :)

Do they ship in outsiders? Because...sign me up! I'm not a fan of choreographing my own stuff, but I'm great at learning and performing dances others come up with. Unless they're actually wanting you to CHEER and not just DANCE, then I'm your girl for choreographing cheer routines. No problem, my friend. You can count on me.

  1. Ciara said...:

Wow! That's pretty nifty that they have a mini olympics! I've never heard about law firms doing that! I'm pretty good at picking up moves, although it does take me some time to get them down; but once I have them I am good to go. Practice does really make perfect!! Hope you have fun while trying to learn new moves!

"Instead she squealed and told us to prepare ourselves to be in our office's cheerleading team."

These things exist? Dear God! You have my sympathies!

As for coordination, I'm o.k. at it. I used to take bellydance classes and that requires a lot of memorizing and coordination. (But thankfully no one has to jump in the air and trust others to catch them. LOL)

I love dancing!!! But I can't follow choreography - The most choreographed dances I can follow are The Macarena, and Saturday Night by Whigfield. True story.

  1. Nikolett said...:

Oh wows ... is this how law firms try to keep their workers in shape and motivate them? It sounds so hardcore! Buuut, if anyone could be a kickass cheerleader, it'd be you :) Since I was a part of a friend's debut and we had to do some choreography, my advice is - go through the steps in segments and once you got one segment down, move onto the next. Annnnd be agressive, be be agressive! :D

  1. Retromus-ik said...:

lol you're internship sounds cool! I so want to take dance classes this summer. I doubt though that I'd be able to do cheerleading, I'm not flexible, cant do any flips....:P

  1. Misery said...:

omg is this even for real? I had no idea that lawers - aka SERIOUS BUSINESS PEOPLE - do this kind of stuff. haha. you know what, your experience could be like a great idea for a movie script! if there's one thing that haven't been filmed yet - that's the mini-olympics of lawers! REally. wow.

For me it all depends on the music that goes with it.
