Caps, Gowns, and Kingdom of Lawbots

Last Thursday I had my graduation ceremonies in school. Two, to be exact. One is bigger, thrown by the university and all that. The second one is from the faculty itself.

I had a mixed feelings about them.

Part of it because I graduated one year later than my plan so I might not be as excited as I've hoped for. 70 or so younger kids (those who were born on 1988 and 1989) also graduated and they're all cheery and bubbly and you got me, along with 25 people from my class (yes the older people) scowled from time to time and complained about how hot it was.

But it doesn't mean I'm not happy though, because I am. FINALLY I'M OUT. Well, I was out already since I passed that fateful thesis presentation in front of my professors back in April but the ceremonies made it official right? I'M FINALLY OUT OF THE KINGDOM OF LAWBOTS. It felt SO GOOD. If you've read my blog for a while, you might know how that place has its own ways to sit on me, pin me down, and make me tear up. And not in a sexy way.

They say I'm gonna miss it. Uh, yeah, okay, maybe one day in a very distant future.

The university ceremony was pretty long, starting at 9 am. I woke up at 6 am because I hired a stylist to do my make up and hair. In Indonesia, girls wear traditional costumes / kebaya under their gowns instead of regular dresses and these usually require certain hairstyle that you can't do yourself. Unless you're really, really good at doing your hair. I got sweaty by the time I put on my gown and sit in the super-crowded main hall with the fellow graduates from all the faculties in my university. The ceremony was pretty moving though, in a way, although all we had to do was sit and mostly listened to sleep inducing speeches. We had freshmen in second floor singing for us and an orchestra. Pretty magical, you know?

The faculty ceremony was longer, but better, a bit more intimate with friends and professors swarming around congratulating us. When they called out my name, I kinda got the urge to cry and salto at the same time. Cheesy. We got more singing, more speeches, and a lot of pictures taken. What else? Oh, my mom couldn't stop taking pictures so I had to hide from her a bit. Then she ping me constantly during a speech from the dean because I fell asleep with my mouth half open and hands on my blackberry. Good times.

What did you remember about your last graduation ceremony?

Did you get bored at some point or am I just that bad of a person? No, don't answer it.

Classic shot with the Dean

I don't have many pictures with my cap on because I couldn't really put it on right and I kinda destroyed it in the end. I spilled orange juice on it.

    Congratulations!

You won't miss it I don't think. I know I don't. Sometimes I look back at my course and have fond memories of some of the good times, but the good times don't make it worth going back.

One of my fond memories happened on my graduation day. One of my lecturers came up to me and said..

"I only gave you a passing mark because I don't want to see you again, and because you scored more than 50 (the passing mark) on the exam"

    Congrats!

My college graduation was pretty boring. It was one where there were a lot of graduates and you don't really get much attention. I've volunteered there the year before so I knew how boring it was. I was actually pretty tempted to ditch my own graduation!

But I did somehow make it somewhat memorable tho. Out of all graduates, I was the only one that had the cap fall off the head out of several thousand graduates. So I can definitely relate with the not wearing cap right part.

Congratulations! Wow that must be a great relief to be finished with school.
I haven't graduated yet, but I am still debating whether or not to sit through the ceremony or not, just because it's such a long, hot and sweaty process.
I would think in the end though, you wouldn't regret being a part of the ceremony.

My graduation from uni was 9 years ago now but I still remember to this day how bored I was during it. Plus by the end I was far too hot, and had sore hands from clapping. And I was also terrified I might fall over!

Congratulations! Nice caps and gowns :)

I really miss college, but that's just me. If I'd taken an extra year, I think I would have been much more ready to leave, mainly because most of my friends would have graduated by then anyway. And there are certainly nice things about being out of school. Now that I'm back in school, I miss my two years that I was school-less.

  1. 1) You look absolutely AMAZING!!!!
    2) Congratulations! Such an accomplishment, they don't say law school is among the hardest around for no reason. I KNOW what this have taken, and you should be soo proud of yourself!
    3) Can you do me a favor? I am looking into going on exchange to Asia, and I was wondering if your school excepted exchange students? Do they have a web site (in English) you could pass me the link to?

hey gorgeous lady! congratulations! why didn't you show us any pics with your kebaya on!! Booooo!!! hahaha! hilarious that your mom "ping'd" you cus you were falling asleep... don't worry, my graduation was pretty boring as well. It was because it was a combined graduation with what seemed like 1000 students so you can imagine how long and boring it was to wait for my name!
